Major League Soccer's Portland Timbers announced Tuesday their first-round play-in game against Chivas USA for a chance at moving closer to making the field for the 2011 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup tournament will take place March 29 at Merlo Field on the campus of the University of Portland.
The winner of that game travels to face the San Jose Earthquakes in April in a second-round match.
Should Portland win that game, they would meet the winner of a game between the Chicago Fire and the defending MLS champion Colorado Rapids in May for a spot in the 40-team field.
The league's Seattle Sounders are the tournament's two-time defending champion.
