Major League Soccer's Sporting Kansas City announced the signing of 2011 first-round SuperDraft pick C.J. Sapong, second-round 2011 Supplemental Draft pick Mike Jones, and defender Scott Lorenz Tuesday.
Sapong, the tenth overall pick out of James Madison University, scored 37 goals and 21 assists in four seasons and was a four-time First Team All-Colonial Athletic Association player and team Offensive Most Valuable Player, the first team any JMU player did so.
He was a senior captain in 2010, when he was named the CAA's Player of the Year.
Sapong also was a two-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America First Team All-South Atlantic Region player and, as a freshman, was the conference and Virginia Sports Infomation Directors Association's Rookie of the Year.
A Northwest Region and Cardinal District Player of the Year at Forest Park High School, he played club soccer at PWSI Magnum and the DC United Youth Academy.
Sapong also played in the USL Premier Development League with the Fredericksburg Gunners and was the leading scorer for Reading United as he led them to the league's final four in 2010.
Jones had six goals and two assists in 60 games at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville and led the Cougars to seven shutouts in 19 games in 2010, when he was named a Second Team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection.
Lorenz played last season for the NSC Minnesota Stars of the USSF Division 2 Pro League, where he was the team's Rookie of the Year, and joined the former Kansas City Wizards after the season ended.
He played in the amateur National Premier Soccer League in 2009, where he was named a Midwest Region All-Star while playing collegiately at the University of Wisconsin, where he had 14 goals and 10 assists in 70 games from 2006 to 2009, including a stretch of 58 consecutive starts beginning in his sophomore season, and he was a two-time Second Team All-Big Ten player in his junior and senior seasons.
