Sockers Take Charge In Annual Postseason Awards

The San Diego Sockers, defending Professional Arena Soccer League champions, continue to flex their muscle and show the rest of the teams in the league who's boss after dominating the league's annual postseaon awards, voted on last month with results announced Tuesday.

Phil Salvaggio was named the league's Coach of the Year after finishing in second place last season. He led the Sockers to a 14-2 record and won the Western Division for the second straight season. The team is 27-5 under his tenure and won both the2009-10  league title and the 2009-10 US Open Arena Soccer Championship.

Forward Kraig Chiles, who, like his coach, finished in second place for the league's Most Valuable Player award to Jeff Hughes of the Cincinnati Kings, won the award this season after scoring a league-high 33 goals and 10 power-play goals, had 12 assists for 45 total points, and finished second in game-winning goals with four.

The Sockers also named three players to All-League teams -- Chiles and defenders Dan Antoniuk and Ze Roberto to the First Team and midfielder Diego Rovira and goalkeeper Riley Swift to the Second Team.

Others named to the First Team and midfielder Eduardo Velez of Revolucion Tijuana and Cincinnat's Hughes and goalkeeper Craig Salvati.

Named to the Second Team were defenders Jeff Henderson (Cincinnati Kings) and Antonio Sutton (California Cougars), midfielder Costea Decu (Detroit Waza) and forward Greg Howes (Tacoma Stars).
