Silverbacks Sign Sandoval, Cox, Maurer, Hunt

The Atlanta Silverbacks of the North American Soccer League announced the signings Thursday of forwards Junior Sandoval and Jon Cox, goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer and defender Willie Hunt.

Sandoval comes to Atlanta on loan from the Puerto Rico Islanders, but played in the city for the Silverbacks' reserve team and at Georgia Perimeter College.

Cox played two seasons for Atlanta's U-23 team in the USL Premier Development League and starred at Georgia Southern for four seasons.

Maurer was the fourth overall pick in the 2011 Major League Soccer SuperDraft and had spent some time with the New York Red Bulls. He will be reunited in Atlanta with current defender Tyler Ruthven and with Cox, who also played on the PDL team in 2009. From 2004 to 2006, Maurer was a member of the US U-17 National Team camp.

Hunt, who played collegiately at NCAA Division II Francis Marion University, will be reunited in Atlanta with midfielder Lucas Paulini, who played together at the PDL's Mississippi Brilla.
