With six games left in the regular season for the Major Indoor Soccer League, the race to fill all three playoff spots is getting quite interesting as Friday night proved.
At First Mariner Arena in Baltimore, Ante Cop scored the game-winning goal 2:11 into overtime as the Chicago Riot, in last place in the league standings at 5-14, stunned the first place Baltimore Blast 11-9.
Alex Megson scored a pair of two-point goals, Novi Marojevic had a three-point goal and Brandon Corday posted a two-pointer in the victory.
Pat Morris led the Blast with a hat trick that included a three-point goal and Matt Watson had their other goal.
Meanwhile, at the Omaha Civic Auditorium, for the first time this season, an MISL team shut out an opponent as the defending regular season champion Milwaukee Wave blanked the Omaha Vipers 21-0.
It was the Wave's fifth shutout and their second road shutout in team history.
Midfielder Greg Howes, in his first game back with the Wave after signing a contract earlier Friday, led the team with six points on a two-point goal and four assists. Howes recently was the player-coach for the Professional Arena Soccer League's Tacoma Stars.
Hewerton Moreira had a brace and an assist for five points, Marcio Leite had a hat trick, Evan McNeley also had three points with a standard goal and an assist, and Ian Bennett hit the back of the net for the Wave.
The Blast (14-4) lead the league by one game over the Wave (13-5), who meet for the final time this season Sunday at US Cellular Arena in Milwaukee.
The Vipers (7-12) are a half-game behind the Missouri Comets (7-11) for the league's third and final playoff spot. Omaha ends their season next Sunday at the Wave while the Comets travel to Chicago this Sunday, then play the league's final game of the regular season next Sunday at the Blast.
The team that wins the regular season earns a bye through the league championship game, which they would host, while the second- and third-place teams meet in a two-leg, aggregate-goal series to determine the opponent in the championship game.
