Red Bulls Fire Assistants Williams, McAleenan

Claiming the usual need to proceed in a different fashion, Major League Soccer's New York Red Bulls Monday fired assistant coach Richie Williams and goalkeeper coach Des McAleenan from current head coach Hans Backe's staff.

Williams played eight seasons in the league between DC United and the MetroStars and joined the Red Bulls as an assistant in 2006, serving under Burke and his three previous people to hold the position -- Mo Johnston, Bruce Arena and Juan Carlos Osorio.

Williams also had two stints as the team's interim head coach.

In 2006, after the firing of Johnston, he went 1-3-2 in six games and, in 2009, after Osorio was released, the team went 3-3-2 under his tenure.

McAleenan came to the Red Bulls in 2002 and has worked with goalkeepers Tim Howard, Jonny Walker, Tony Meola and current number one NY goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul.

Red Bulls general manager and sporting director Erik Soler did not state who would now fill the positions or how long the process would take to name replacements.
