NASL Names Downs Commissioner

The North American Soccer League announced Monday David Downs will become the league's first Commissioner, effective next Monday, five days before their first season as a stand-alone US Soccer Federation Division 2 league opens.

The NASL was grouped with the former USL First Division in 2010 to create the USSF Division 2 Pro League after neither league was able to gain certification on their own for the season.

Downs comes to the NASL after serving as the executive director of the USSF's USA Bid Committee that attempted to win hosting rights to either the 2018 or 2022 FIFA World Cup.

He also serves on the board of directors for FC Westchester (NY) in the USSF Development Academy.

Downs was instrumental in successful negotiations with FIFA in his 30-year broadcasting career spent between ABC and Univision to gain North American broadcast rights to every FIFA World Cup from the last time the US hosted the quadrennial event to the 2014 World Cup, set for Rio de Janiero, Brazil.
