Nagbe To Have Sports Hernia Surgery; Out 2-4 Weeks For Timbers

Major League Soccer's Portland Timbers will be without their 2011 first-round SuperDraft pick, midfielder/forward Darlington Nagbe of the defending NCAA champion University of Akron, for two to four weeks following planned sports hernia surgery Friday in Santa Monica, CA, the team announced Tuesday.

Nagbe led the Zips to the 2010 national championship after scoring seven goals and an career-high 13 assists as a junior in 2010 and won the Hermann Trophy as college soccer's best men's player.

In three seasons with Akron, he had 19 goals and 19 assists in 73 career games, leading the school to three straight Mid-American Conference Tournament titles from 2008 to 2010 and a finals appearance in the 2009 NCAA College Cup.

He was also the conference's Player of the Year in 2010 and a First Team All-American selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Nagbe also was a three-time All-MAC First Team member and had 10 goals in 25 games during his 2009 sophomore season, earning NSCAA All-American honors.

He won the MAC's Newcomer of the Year award in 2008.
