MLS Disciplinary Committee Hands Down Punishments For Preseason Actions

The Major League Soccer Discliplinary Committee Wednesday issued punishments Wednesday following the separate actions of FC Dallas defender Jair Benitez and Real Salt Lake defender Jamison Olave in preseason games.

Benitez was fined $250 and suspended for Saturday's home opener against the Chicago Fire for his actions during a February 12 game against the Houston Dynamo.

The committee, which has the power to review all videotapes of league games and administer punishment for any actions during a game, whether they were seen or not by the officials working a game, originally chose to suspend him from two games but, after an appeal was filed by the MLS Players Union, Commissioner Don Garber chose to reduce the suspension to one game.

Olave was fined $250 for publicly criticizing a league official using the social media program Twitter following a March 8 games against Sporting Kansas City.
