Japanese star Nozomi Hiroyama signed a contract Wednesday to play for the Richmond Kickers of USL PRO.

He last played 73 games in the J-League Division 2 in his home country for Thespa Kusatsu.

Hiroyama's career, which has taken him to four continents over 15 years, began in 1996, when he joined the J-League's JEF United Ichihara, where he played in 146 games.

He then transferred to Cerro Perteno in Paraguay, where he became the first Japanese player to score a goal in the Copa Libertadores tournament.

Hiroyama next played 10 games in Portugal for Sporting Braga the next season, along with playing for Montpelier HSC in France's Ligue 1, where he was the first Japanese player to score goals in those leagues, as well.

Over the next five seasons, Hiroyama returned to the J-League with Tokyo Verdy 1969 for 79 games and Cerezo Ozaka for 15 others.

Hiroyama also played on his country's U-18, U-19 and U-20 national teams and played twice in 2001 and 2003 with the country's senior team.
