Fire, United Open Carolina Challenge Cup With Wins

Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire and DC United opened the 2011 Carolina Challenge Cup tournament at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, SC Saturday with wins over MLS' Toronto FC and the host team, the Charleston Battery of USL PRO, who have never won their own event.

In the opening game, Marco Pappa was assisted by Davis Paul and Gaston Puerari on a sixth-minute goal as Chicago shut out Toronto 1-0.

In the nightcap. Joseph Ngwenya scored the game-tying goal in the 71st minute off Josh Wolff as United edged the Battery 2-1.

Dax McCarty fed a pass to Chris Pontius, who scored in the fourth minute, but Battery star Stephen Armstrong, a former member of United, knotted the score at 1-1 in the 15th minute on a penalty kick.

On Matchday 2 of the three-matchday round-robin event Wednesday, the Fire will face United and the Battery get Toronto.
