FIFA, the world governing body for soccer, announced Friday they have granted permission for Major League Soccer's Vancouver Whitecaps to allow overall number one and 2011 SuperDraft selection, forward Omar Salgado, to play for the team as soon as possible, rather than making them wait until after September 10, when he would turn 18.
FIFA bans players under 17 from playing on professional teams until they reach their 18th birthday as a way to prevent youth players from being signed with -- and never used by -- a club outside their home country.
However, Salgado currently plays for the US U-20 National Team, who are in qualifying play to earn a spot in the 2011 FIFA U-20 Men's World Cup in Colombia this summer.
