Former Colorado Rapids midfielder Ciaran O'Brien, who has spent most of his three professional season loaned out to other teams, signed Monday to play for the Atlanta Silverbacks of the North American Soccer League.
In 2008, Colorado loaned O'Brien to the Seattle Sounders, then of the USL First Division, playing in five games before being returned to the Rapids.
2009 saw him loaned to two teams in USL-1 -- the Austin Aztex (now Orlando City Soccer Club), where he played three times, and the Montreal Impact, where he played 13 games and scored his first professional goal.
He played a season of collegiate soccer at the University of San Diego (2006) and University of California-Santa Barbara (2007) before choosing to sign and MLS contract and be part of their Generation adidas program.
At San Diego, he was the West Coast Conference's Freshman of the Year and a Second Team All-Conference selection and, at UCSB, was Big West Conference Midfielder of the Year and a First Team All-Conference pick.
His father, Fran, played for 16 years between Ireland, Canada and the US and made four appearances for the Irish national team, while his brother, Leighton, played for 10 years in Sweden, Canada and the US.
