Major League Soccer's San Jose Earthquakes announced the signing of forward Matt Luzunaris to a contract Friday.
He joined the team during the preseason and was part of their travel squad that went to England. He scored the winning goal in a 2-1 victory Tuesday against the Vancouver Whitecaps in an MLS Reserve Division game.
Luzunaris, a two-sport athlete at West Boca Raton High School in Boca Raton, FL and a member of the prestigious Schulz Academy along with former New York Red Bulls and current US Men's National Team member Jozy Altidore, played one season of college soccer at the University of Central Florida, where he was a teammate of current Chicago Fire star Sean Johnson.
Luzunaris scored four goals that season and was invited to a training camp session with the US U-20 National Team.
He also spent time in Europe training with Manchester United and playing for two teams in Austria -- SC Magna Wiener Neustadt and, more recently, SK Rapid Wien.
During his time at Neustadt, he was loaned for six months to Botafogo of Brazil but visa issues kept him from playing there and he was returned to Neustadt.
