Major League Soccer's San Jose Earthquakes signed second-round 2011 SuperDraft pick Anthony Ampaipitakwong, a midfielder from defending NCAA national champion Akron, to a contract Tuesday.
A two-time Hermann Trophy semifinalist in his final two seasons with the Zips, he had 17 goals and 30 assists over four seasons and was a two-time Soccer America Team MVP First Team.
He was also named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Season First Team in 2010, as well as the College Soccer News All-American Second Team and the NCAA College Cup All-Tournament Team.
Ampaipitakwong, one of three captains on the 2010 team, started all 24 games and was ranked 25th in the country among college players in assists with 11.
In his junior season, he was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-American First Team, College Soccer News All-America First Team and the Mid-American Conference's All-Conference team. He was also a National Player of the Week on November 23, 2010 by College Soccer News and was a two-time TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week member.
In that season, he has eight goals, including four game-winners, and scored two goals in a game three times.
He ended his career at Akron as the all-time leader in games played at 93.
Before joining Akron, he was in residency with the US U-17 National Team at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL, where he finished his high school career, and led the Dallas Texans club team to a national championship in 2005.
