Comets Gain Former Star Maher From Riot For Playoff Run

The Missouri Comets of the Major Indoor Soccer League announced Wednesday they have signed former Kansas City Comets forward Anthony Maher for the final games of the 2010-11 season in hopes of getting the last of three available playoffs.

The Baltimore Blast (14-3) and the defening league regular season champion Milwaukee Wave (12-5) have clinched two of the spots with the Comets and the Omaha Vipers tied for third with identical 7-11 records.

The regular season champion gets a bye to the league championship game, which they will host. The second- and third-place teams will meet in a two-game, aggregate-goal series to determine who the opponent in the one-game championship final will be.

Maher was signed last summer by the last-place Chicago Riot after the Philadelphia Kixx disbanded, where he played since 2008, and scored four goals and five assists in four games for Chicago.

He began his pro career in the original MISL with the Cleveland Force in 2002, being named the team's Rookie of the Year and to the All-League Team.

In 2003, he was traded to Kansas City, where he was their Newcomer of the Year with 28 goals and 10 assists.

Still with the Comets in 2004, he played 14 games and scored 20 goals with five assists before tearing his anterior cruciate ligament. After the indoor soccer season, he signed with Milwaukee Wave United of the USL A-League.

He also spent time with the Chicago Storm and the MISL's Wave in his career.
