For the fifth straight year, the first time any male or female player has ever accomplished it, Brazilian forward and Women's Professional Soccer player Marta was named FIFA's Women's World Player of the Year at a ceremony Monday in Zurich, Switzerland.
In WPS, Marta is the only winner of the Michelle Akers Player of the Year and PUMA Golden Boot awards in the league's two-year history and played last season for FC Gold Pride, who won the 2010 regular season and league championship before dissolving the franchise.
She joined the Pride from the Los Angeles Sol, where she led the team to a 2009 regular season championship, but the team lost in the championship game to Sky Blue FC before it, too, folded.
Marta has one season remaining on her contract with the league.
