USWNT, WPS Midfielder Kristine Lilly Announces Retirement

Midfielder Kristine Lilly of the US Women's National Team and the Boston Breakers of Women's Professional Soccer announced her retirement Wednesday.after 24 years in the sport.

Among her numerous accomplishments, she leaves the sport as its world record holder for most international appearances by a player -- male or female -- at 352, debuting with the US team at age 16 August 3, 1987.

She played for her country in all five FIFA Women's World Cup tournaments and in three Olympics, leading them to championship titles or gold medals in four of those competitions.

Lilly also competed for both versions of the Breakers -- in the Women's United Soccer Association from 2001 to 2003 and in WPS in 2009 and 2010.
