USL PRO Announces Postseason Format

USL PRO, the newly-merged combination of the former First and Second Divisions, announced Monday the format for postseason play in the inaugural season.

Eight teams will qualify for postseason play -- the top three teams in the American (Charlotte Eagles, Richmond Kickers, Charleston Battery, Orlando City Soccer Club, Wilmington Hammerheads) and National (Dayton Dutch Lions, Harrisburg City Islanders, Rochester Rhinos, Pittsburgh Riverhounds and FC New York) Divisions, and the top two teams from its International Division (Antigua Barracuda FC, Puerto Rico United, Sevilla FC Puerto Rico, Los Angeles Blues and River Plate FC).

All playoff games, including the championship game, will be single-elimination games and the postseason opens with the quarterfinal round, taking place August 19-21.

In that round, the matchups will be as follows:

- International Division #2 @ International Division #1
- National Division #3 @ National Division #1
- American Division #3 @ American Division #1
- National Division #2 vs. American Division #2 with the team with the most regular season points hosting

After the quarterfinals, teams will be re-seeded for the semifinals, set for August 26-28, with the top seed hosting the fourth seed and the second seed hosting the third seed.

The championship game will be held at the highest seeded team's pitch between September 2 and 4.

The league previously announced its 180-game regular season schedule, which runs from April 2 to August 13.

All teams in the league will play a 24-game schedule.

In the American and National Division, each of the 10 combined teams will play each other in a home-and-home series, play two games on the road at either the Caribbean or Los Angeles, and host two games versus International Division teams.

In the International, each team will play the other four teams four times (two home, two away) with four other games home-and-home against American and National Division foes.
