Talley Retires After 13 MLS Seasons

Midfielder/defender Carey Talley announced his retirement from professional soccer Wednesday after 13 seasons in Major League Soccer.

The Memphis, TN native graduated from North Carolina and was selected 14th overall in the 1998 MLS College Draft (now called SuperDraft) by DC United and led them to the CONCACAF Champions League and Interamerican Cup championships in his first season with them, and started 16 of United's final 18 MLS regular season games.

In 1999, when they won the MLS Cup, Talley was a regular starter.

He was traded after the 2002 season to the Kansas City Wizards (now Sporting Kansas City), then played for FC Dallas, Real Salt Lake and Chivas USA before going back to United in March 2010, who then traded him to the Red Bulls September 15, 2010 for a second round pick in the 2011 SuperDraft.

Talley had 20 goals and 28 assists over his MLS career and started 262 of 315 regular season appearances, the eighth-highest amount of appearances in league history.
