Real Maryland Brings Back Gonzalo As Head Coach

The Real Maryland Monarchs, who now play in the USL Premier Development League, announced Sunday they have brought back Silvio Gonzalo as head coach for the first time since the team was founded and took part in the now-defunct USL Second Division in 2008.

Gonzalo began his coaching career in 1985 with Real Espana, leading them to the Amateur National Championship in his first of his three seasons there (1985-87) and the 1987 Lamar Hunt US Open Soccer Championship in his last season.

In 1988, he led the Washington Diplomats to the championship of the American Professional Soccer League.

From 1991 to 1997, he was in a similar position with the Iberia Soccer Club, winning another Amateur National Championship in his final season and was a finalist for Region 1 Coach of the Year with the Metro DC/Virginia Soccer Association in 1997.

From 1998 to 2007, he helped build the Northern Virginia Royals, now in the USL PDL, into one of the more prominent teams in the league.
