Major League Soccer's defending champion Colorado Rapids re-signed forward Andre Akpan and midfielder Jamie Smith to new contracts Friday.
Akpan, the 22nd overall pick in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft, played 13 minutes of one regular season game in his debut season, but played in two games of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup tournament. He was also loaned last season to FC Tampa Bay of the USSF Division 2 Pro League and the Real Maryland Monarchs in USL Second Division.
Smith, who came to Colorado July 28, 2009, has started 19 of 26 career games with a goal and nine assists, eight of those coming in 2010 when he led the team in that category. He also played in two MLS Cup postseason games in 2010.
