MLS Holds First Supplemental Draft Since 2009

The Vancouver Whitecaps selected defender Michael Boxall from the University of California-Santa Barbara with the first pick in Major League Soccer's Supplemental Draft, held Tuesday via conference call from league headquarters in New York.

The league's other 2011 season expansion team, the Portland Timbers, selected forward Spencer Thompson from California-Irvine.

It's the first time MLS has held such a draft since abolishing it after the 2009 season. It was revived as part of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement reached between players and team owners.
