Major League Soccer, bowing to concerns from teams, coaches and players, announced Wednesday that, beginning with next week's event, the annual SuperDraft will be cut to three rounds of selections versus four previously, and that the league will reinstate the Supplemental Draft, last held in 2009.
The SuperDraft will take place next Thursday (January 13) as part of the annual National Soccer Coaches Association of America convention in Baltimore and the Supplemental Draft will be conducted via conference call January 18.
The announced changes were made after concerns that the number of per-round selections has surged for 10 each over four rounds in 2004 to 18 in 2010.
During the SuperDraft, all teams will have four minutes to make their selections in the first two rounds and three minutes in the third round with a five minute break held between each round. Each team can also ask for one five minute timeout during the process.
All teams that received a fourth round draft choice in a previous trade will have that pick converted to a Supplemental Draft pick.
