Hammerheads Sign Former Campbell, Furman Midfielder Jata

The Wilmington Hammerheads of USL PRO announced the signing Friday of former Campbell and Furman University midfielder Richard Jata for the 2011 season.

Jata recently finished his first season as a volunteer assistant coach at Campbell while completing his degree in communication studies.

Jata began his college career at Furman, where he led the team in scoring in 2004 with four goals and three assists over 17 games and was named one of the country's top 100 freshman players by CollegeSoccer.com.

He later transferred to Campbell, where he was a second-team National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-American and a first-team All-South Regional pick in 2008, when he led the Fighting Camels to a second Atlantic Sun regular season championship and a third trip to the conference's championship game in four years.

Jata was the '08 A-Sun's player of the year, a first-team all-conference pick for the third straight season, and the school's Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year after scoring a career-high 28 points in 17 games on 12 goals and four assists to lead the conference in goals per game (0.71) and points per game (1.65).

In three seasons at Campbell, the Fighting Camels were 20-1-1 in games, including 8-1-0 in the 2008 seasons. He had 12 game-winning goals in his career, second-most in league history, and had 71 points, 15th best in school history, on 28 goals and 15 assists over 57 games.

He ranked 15th in the nation in goals per game in 2008, was 19th overall in points per game and tied a conference record with seven game-winning goals. Jata scored in each of Campbell's last nine games that season.

Jata was also a second-team All-South Region pick in 2006 and 2007 and was twice named to the A-Sun All-Tournament team in his final two seasons there.

He was selected by Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire in the fourth round of the 2009 MLS SuperDraft and played last summer in the USL Premier Development League with the Carolina Dynamo.
