Former Red Bull Petke Moves From Pitch To Front Office

Former defender Mike Petke, who retired from Major League Soccer in 2010 with the New York Red Bulls, was named the franchise's Individual Development Coach and Business Operations Manager Wednesday.

Petke began his eventual 12-year career with the former MetroStars as the eighth overall pick in the 1998 MLS College Draft, now called the SuperDraft.

He played five seasons with the MetroStars, was named to three straight league All-Star teams in 2000, 2001 and 2002, and led the franchise to the 2000 Eastern Conference regular season title and an appearance in the conference's championship game.

Petke then was traded to DC United, where he had five goals in 58 regular season games between the 2003 and 2005 seasons, before being traded in 2006 to the Colorado Rapids, where he played in 80 games between then and 2009, winning the team's Defender of the Year honor in his final season there.

He returned to New York in 2009 for his final two seasons, totalling five goals and four assists over 169 regular season league games. Petke also appeared in nine MLS Cup postseason games and 13 games in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup tournament.

Petke left the game as the team's all-time leader in games played, games started and minutes played.
