Chivas USA Wins Lottery For Rights To Midfielder Sal Zizzo

In a weighted lottery held via conference call from Major League Soccer's headquarters in New York Wednesday, Chivas USA won the rights to former US youth international midfielder Sal Zizzo, who signed a league contract Tuesday after not being retained by Hannover in Germany's Bundeliga.

His contract with the team, whom he played for since 2007, was not renewed and he was just given clearance to play in Germany's Bundesliga 2 for Dusseldorf after tearing an anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee while training in 2009 for Hannover.

Zizzo, who played on the US U-18 and U-20 national teams, in all six games during the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup, and once for the US senior national team August 22, 2007 against Sweden, played two seasons at UCLA before leaving to join Hannover.

The Goats had the third-best percentage chance of winning Zizzo's rights at 16.28% in a lottery where percentage chances were determined by records of each MLS franchise during their last 30 regular season games.

Four teams -- the New England Revolution, Chicago Fire, Toronto FC and Columbus Crew -- chose to opt out of the lottery.

Now earning his rights, Chivas is not eligible to participate in any future lottery drawings this season.
