The Vancouver Whitecaps, joining Major League Soccer as a 2011 expansion team, announced Wednesday Richard Grootscholten has been named the team's technical director as well as head coach of the franchise's affiliate in the USL Premier Development League, the Vancouver Whitecaps Residency.
Grootscholten joins the Whitecaps after spending the last four seasons with Sparta Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
From 2006 to 2008, he was head of the team's youth academy and assistant coach of their first team. In his tenure with the team, 12 out of 17 youth academy players over a five-year period joined the senior team.
Sparta Rotterdam won the Rinus Michels Award for having the best youth academy in the Netherlands in the 2008-09 season and were runners-up to the honor in the 2007-08 and 2009-10 seasons.
