Abby Wambach scored goals in the 33rd and 50th minute, Lauren Cheney had the team's first goal off a Lori Lindsey assist in the 17th minute, and Lindsey also assisted on Wambach's final goal as the US Women's National Team took third place in the 2010 CONCACAF Women's World Cup Qualifying Tournament in Cancun, Mexico Monday with a 3-0 victory over Costa Rica, keeping their hopes alive to make the field for the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup.
The US, the world's top-ranked women's team entering the tournament, who were stunned by Mexico in the semifinals of the tournament Friday, now advance to a two-leg, aggregate goal series against 11th-ranked Italy with the winner earning the final spot in the tournament field. It is the first time the US has had to compete in a playoff to make the Women's World Cup draw.
Italy finished fifth in a European qualifying tournament. The US team is 8-4-1 overall against Italy, including a 2-0-2 record in games since 1991.
The first leg of the series will be next Saturday at Euganeo Stadium in Padova, Italy with the second game November 27 at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, IL, home to the Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer and the Chicago Red Stars of Women's Professional Soccer.
The US team will now rest until this Sunday, when an 18-player roster will head to Padova. The roster is expected to be announced in a few days.
