MLS Announces Dates, Format For Inaugural Two-Stage Re-Entry Draft

Major League Soccer announced Tuesday the first-ever Re-Entry Draft, created as part of the new collective bargaining agreement between the league and its players union, will take place over two stages December 8 and 15.

The draft is for players who are at least 23 years old with over three years of league service and an unrenewed club option by their previous team and for players at least 25 with over four years in the league and an expiring contract.

In the first stage of the draft, teams can select a player, but must pay him either his current option year salary or his previous salary. In the second stage, remaining players can be selected with no salary limitations on the team.

If a player is selected in the second stage of the draft, teams must make a firm contract offer within seven days or the team the player was with has right of first refusal on any contract offer from another team.

Players not selected in either stage of the draft become immediate free agents and can sign with any MLS team.

In both stages of the draft, teams will be placed in order of the 2010 finish, including postseason record.
