The Puerto Rico Islanders are the first -- and will be only -- champion of the USSF Division 2 Pro League after they played the Carolina RailHawks to a 1-1 draw Saturday at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, NC and won the two-game total goal series by a 3-1 aggregate.
The Islanders won the opening game of the series last Sunday at Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium in Bayamon, PR 2-0.
All the goals Saturday were scored in a two-minute span of the first half.
Sandy Gbandi had an unassisted goal in the eighth minute for the Islanders, then Floyd Franks assisted Tom Heinemann on the game-tying goal in the tenth minute.
The USSF Division 2 Pro League was created to allow teams from the former USL First Division, now merged with the USL Second Division as USL PRO, and the revived North American Soccer League, to compete in a league while both entities work out logistics to be able to be recertified by the US Soccer Federation as separate second division leagues for the 2011 season.
