Whitecaps Sign McDonald, Cut James

The Vancouver Whitecaps of the USSF Division 2 Pro League announced the signing Thursday of forward Jonathan McDonald from Costa Rica Primera Division team Club Sport Herediano and the release of forward Marlon James.

McDonald, now 22, began his professional career at age 16 with Asociacion Deportivo Carmelita in the Primera Division, playing in three games of the 2004-05 season.

In 40 career games at Herediano, he scored 17 goals, including eight goals in 10 games this season.

James, who joined the Whitecaps in December 2008 after four seasons playing in Malaysia, started 17 of 31 games during his tenure, including four of seven games in 2010, and finished with 12 goals and two assists, one of those goals happening this season.
