Abby Wambach scored back-to-back goals in a two-minute span of the first half as the Washington Freedom played to a 2-0 shutout against the expansion Philadelphia Independence Wednesday in Women's Professional Soccer play at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
She was assisted by Sonia Bompastor on her 39th minute goal and Cat Whitehill on the second in the 41st minute.
The Freedom are tied for fourth place in the league standings with the Chicago Red Stars at identical 5-8-5 records with 20 points. Washington next faces the defending league champion Sky Blue FC August 11 at Rutgers University's Yurcak Field in Piscataway, NJ.
Philadelphia, in second place in their debut season at 8-6-3 with 27 points, will host the Boston Breakers this Sunday at the University of West Chester in West Chester, PA.
