Toronto FC Signs Youth Academy Star Henry To Contract

Utilizing one of two league-approved roster spots for the signing of home grown talent, Major League Soccer's Toronto FC announced the signing Thursday of defender Doneil Henry, who was a member of their youth academy.

MLS now allows teams to sign local players to their roster without those players counting against the 24-man senior roster under the terms of the league's new collective bargaining agreement with the players union.

Henry has played in three exhibition games for Toronto FC this season.

The first opportunity came June 2 when he played the full 90 minutes in a scoreless draw with the Vancouver Whitecaps in the final game of the Nutrilite Canadian Championship, which determines Canada's entry into the CONCACAF Champions League tournament,

On July 21, he started and played 77 minutes in Toronto's 1-0 loss to the Bolton Wanderers of the English Premier League in the annual Carlsberg Cup game.

Finally, he started the second leg of a 2010-11 CONCACAF Champions League qualification series with Motagua of Honduras August 3.
