Timbers To Introduce Spencer As Head Coach Of MLS Team

The Portland Timbers, who will join Major League Soccer in 2011 from the USSF Division 2 Pro League, along with the Vancouver Whitecaps, announced Tuesday John Spencer will become their first head coach and will introduce him at a Wednesday press conference.

The native of Glasgow, Scotland played 14 seasons in Scotland and England. His best English seasons came from 1992 to 1996 with Chelsea, where he scored a total 43 goals. He played 14 times for the Scottish National Team from 1994 to 1997.

He joined MLS' Colorado Rapids in 2001 and became a two-time league All-Star in 2001 and 2003. He scored 37 goals in 88 regular season games, ending with the 2004 season, when he announced his retirement as a player.

Spencer became an assistant coach with MLS' Houston Dynamo in 2006 and helped the franchise win back-to-back MLS Cup titles in 2006 and 2007 and was the head coach who led them to the league's last Reserve Division Championship in 2008.

He resigned from the team July 13, 2010, reportedly to accept the Timbers' job.
