Timbers Takes Three Of Five 2010 USL PDL Awards

The Portland Timbers U23s, the first USL Premier Development League franchise to go unbeaten and untied in the regular season since the 1998 Jackson (MS) Chargers, claimed three of the five league awards announced Friday at the annual USL PDL Championship Weekend Banquet Friday afternoon in Portland, OR.

Award winners were selected in a vote of league coaches and general managers.

Forward Brent Richards was named the USL PDL's Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year winner after the current University of Washington Huskies player tallied 14 goals and earned 30 points in only 12 games this season.

In MVP voting, Richards defeated Thunder Bay Chill forward Brandon Swartzendruber, who was the league's Scoring Champion, and edged New Jersey Rangers forward Dominic Reinold for the Rookie of the Year honor.

Timbers head coach Jim Rilett was named the league's Coach of the Year.

Joe Tait of the Baton Rouge Capitals was named the USL PDL Defender of the Year after leading his team to the PDL's Southern Conference Championship by scoring six goals and an assist during the season.

Finally, Ryan Meara, who had a 0.666 goals against average and a 10-3-3 record in the regular season for the Ironbound Express, was named Goalkeeper of the Year.
