Guillermo Barros Schelotto scored an eighth minute penalty kick and assisted Steven Lenhart on an 80th minute goal as the Eastern Conference-leading Columbus Crew defeated the Colorado Rapids 3-1 in Major League Soccer play at Crew Stadium Saturday.
Jason Garey also tallied a goal for the Crew, who won for the ninth time in 11 home games and is 12-5-4 overall with 40 points.
Columbus hosts red-hot FC Dallas, who extended their current unbeaten streak to 11 games earlier Saturday over Chivas USA at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, TX, next Saturday.
Colorado, who is 1-3-7 in their last 11 games, got their lone goal from Pablo Mastroeni and are now 7-6-7 with 28 points, good for sixth place in the Western Conference. The Rapids host the Houston Dynamo, who snapped a 10-game losing streak Saturday by beating the Chicago Fire, next Saturday.
