Sanderson Goal Gives Independence Win Over Red Stars

Lianne Sanderson, a late substitution for the expansion Philadelphia Independence, proved her worth to the team by scoring the game-winning goal in the 78th minute of a 2-1 victory over the host Chicago Red Stars in Women's Professional Soccer play from Toyota Park in Bridgeview, IL Wednesday.

Amy Rodriguez opened the scoring for Philadelphia with her 12th goal of the season in the 53rd minute, putting her one behind the league lead in the category, off Lori Lindsey's seventh assist of the season.

Chicago tied the game a 1-all when Casey Nogueira fed a pass to Ella Masur, who headed in a goal in the 62nd minute.

The Independence are 9-6-4 with 31 points and are in second place in the league standings. They will host fellow 2010 expansion franchise, the Atlanta Beat, this Sunday.

The Red Stars (5-9-6, 21 points) are tied for fifth in the league standings with the Washington Freedom (5-8-6), who host the Red Stars next Thursday.
