Major League Soccer's New York Red Bulls announced Friday they have lost midfielders Luke Sassano and Brian Nielsen to season-ending injuries and they have also waived defender Kevin Goldthwaite.
Sassano, who played in three games this season, underwent reconstructive surgery on his right ankle Thursday and will be out four to six months.
He was placed on the team's season-ending injury list, a move that will allow the Red Bulls to add newly signed Designated Player Rafael Marquez to the roster and allow him to make his team and league debut Sunday against the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park.
Nielsen will miss the next five months after suffering cartilage damage in his right knee after playing in two games this season.
Goldthwaite, who came to the team via a trade by Toronto FC in 2007, has not played this season due to an injury but scored two goals and two assists in 54 regular season games with the Red Bulls.
