Originally set to be announced at a Tuesday press conference, Major League Soccer's New York Red Bulls announced the signing Monday of the team's newest Designated Player, Mexican midfielder Rafael Marquez, at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, NJ.
Marquez becomes the Red Bulls' third Designated Player on the roster, a move which cost the team $250,000 to obtain the ability to sign him, and makes New York the first MLS franchise to have the distinction of having three DPs, joining current stars Juan Pablo Angel and Thierry Henry.
Marquez began his career at age 17 when he joined Atlas of Guatemala's Primera Division, where he played in 77 games before leaving the team for Europe in 1999.
He then played for Monaco in the French Ligue 1 and, during his seasons there, led them to the league title in 2000.
He has spent the last seven seasons with FC Barcelona in La Liga, leading them to four league titles and two UEFA Champions League titles.
Marquez was also captain of Mexico's national team for over eight years and led them to FIFA World Cup appearances in 2002, 2006 and 2010 over his 94 appearances with the team.
