Neil Barton's pass to Jonathan Villenueva in the 72nd minute allowed the defending USL Second Division champion Richmond Kickers to play to a 1-1 tie aganst the Real Maryland Monarchs Saturday at Richmond City Stadium and advance to next week's one-game home playoff semifinal against the third-place Pittsburgh Riverhounds.
Alan Sanchez scored Real Maryland's first and only goal as the Monarchs ended the 2010 season at 3-8-9 with 16 points, dead last in the standings.
Richmond finished in second place in the standings at 9-5-6 with 33 points and the winner of next Saturday's Kickers-Pittsburgh Riverhounds game at Richmond will meet the league-leading Charleston Battery at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, SC for the USL-2 title August 28.
