Fire Welcome Segares Back, But Trade Ward To Earthquakes

Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire welcomed back defender Gonzalo Segares to the franchise Friday after he was transferred without a fee after spending six months with Apollon Limassol in Cyprus' First Division.

He led the team to a fourth place finish in the division this season and played in 12 games.

A third round pick in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft, Segares scored eight goals and seven assists in 108 regular season games for the Fire between the 2005 and 2009 seasons.

He also led the franchise to their fourth Lamar Hunt US Open Cup championship trophy in 2007 and was also named the team's Defender Of The Year,

Chicago also announced Friday they have traded defender Tim Ward to the San Jose Earthquakes for a conditional 2011 MLS SuperDraft pick.

Ward was drafted 12th overall in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft by the then-New York MetroStars, now called the New York Red Bulls, and assisted on three goals in 25 games since he joined the Fire in 2009.
