Fire Sign Pineda As First-Ever Homegrown Player

Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire announced Tuesday 17-year-old midfielder Victor Pineda has been signed as the franchise's first Homegrown Player under a league initiative started in 2007 to improve the quality of play among teams.

Each team is allowed two such players, who do not count against their 24-man senior rosters.

Pineda will be eligible to compete for Chicago Wednesday when they host the New England Revolution at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, IL.

He spent five seasons within the team's youth system -- two with the Chicago Fire Juniors, three with the Chicago Fire Academy.

At the academy, he scored eight goals and two assists in 28 games over the three seasons.

Pineda led the academy to the 2010 US Soccer Development Acedemy's U-16 National Championship, the first MLS-based academy club to do so.

Pineda was a member of the US Soccer Federation's U-17 residency program in Bradenton, FL in 2008 and 2009.

He was recently called up to the US U-18 Men's National Team for a trip to Argentina.
