The Chicago Fire did something no team in Major League Soccer had been able to do to the league's best team, the Western Conference-leading Los Angeles Galaxy -- beat them on their home pitch of The Home Depot Center in Carson, CA -- Sunday in a 3-2 victory.
Chicago stormed to a 2-0 lead on back-to-back goals in the fourth minute by Marco Pappa, assisted by Baggio Husidic, and in the fifth minute as Patrick Nyarko assisted Collins John, then added another in the 18th minute as Mike Banner posted an unassisted goal.
The Galaxy's goals came off Landon Donovan penalty kicks in the 37th and 81st minute.
Not only was this loss LA's first at home in MLS play, it was their second loss of the week at home as the Puerto Rico Islanders of the USSF Division 2 Pro League beat them 4-1 this past Tuesday in the first game of a two-game Premliminary Round series to qualify for a spot in the 2010-11 CONCACAF Champions League. Los Angeles plays Game 2 of the aggregate goal series Wednesday in Bayamon, PR.
Chicago improves to a balanced 5-5-5 record with 20 points and is fourth in the Eastern Conference standings. The Fire host the New York Red Bulls next Sunday.
The Galaxy remain the best team in MLS and the Western Conference at 12-3-4 wth 40 points. They travel to Red Bull Arena August 14 to face New York.
