Major League Soccer's San Jose Earthquakes announced the signing Monday of Brazilian midfielder Geovanni as the franchise's first -- and the league's 14th -- Designated Player.

Geovanni spent the last two seasons playing for Hull City, who have been relegated from the English Premier League to the second-level Coca-Cola Championship for the 2011 season. He scored 13 goal in 65 career games, including the team's first EPL goal in 2008 versus Fulham.

He also played for FC Barcelona (2001-03) and Benfica (2003-06) in Spain's La Liga and the 2007-08 season in the English Premier League at Manchester City.

Geovanni also represented his country at the 2000 Olympics and the 2001 Copa America tournament.
