In the case of the roster for Major League Soccer's San Jose Earthquakes, it's not who can play that's a problem; it's those who can't.
Rookie defender Ike Opara will need surgery and be out for several weeks after breaking his left foot in a 1-0 loss to the Seattle Sounders Saturday. The Earthquakes did not give a timetable Monday for his return this season.
Another rookie defender, Steven Beitashour, will also need surgery to repair a broken right hand suffered in practice Monday.
San Jose has already had to suffer with the loss of defender Chris Leitch, who strained his left hip two weeks ago in an exhibition game against Tottenham Hotpsur of the English Premier League.
Finally, the team announced Monday they have released midfielder Javier Robles, who played in two games this season but did not register a goal or an assist.
