Yael Averbuch's goal off a Heather O'Reilly assist in the 68th minute gave the defending Women's Professional Soccer champion Sky Blue FC a 1-0 victory at Yurcak Field on the Rutgers University campus in Piscataway, NJ over the expansion Philadelphia Independence.
The game started with rain but was delayed for nearly two hours after 17 minutes due to lightning in the area, but the victory snapped a three-game losing streak for Sky Blue.
Sky Blue (7-9-4, 25) is tied for the fourth and final playoff spot in the league with the Washington Freedom (6-8-7), who they face at the Maryland SoccerPlex Saturday.
Philadelphia is in second place at 10-7-4 with 34 points and almost assured of a playoff berth in their debut season. The Independence host the Boston Breakers next Sunday.
