By result of a coin flip Wednesday, the Vancouver Whitecaps defeated the Portland Timbers, both joining Major League Soccer in the 2011 season from the USSF Division 2 Pro League, to have the opportunity to pick first among eight different ways of gaining talent to build their franchises around.
The Whitecaps will now have until August 11 to decide if they wish to have the first overall pick in the 2011 MLS Expansion Draft or the 2011 MLS SuperDraft.
The teams will then alternate claiming first picks in other player acquisition technqiues.
Those are United Soccer Leagues Priority on the opening of the signing period, allocation ranking, Designated Player ranking, Discovery Player ranking, Lottery ranking and Waiver/Re-Entry Draft ranking.
What a nice surprise. At least the Caps won't get screwed by MLS like the Grizzlies were by the NBA.
