In a recent visit to the United Soccer Leagues website, I noticed a new tab on their home page, where you can go quickly to the separate home pages of its various leagues (USL First Division, USL Second Division, USL Premier Development League, USL W-League, USL Super-20 League and USL Youth Development), called I-League.
Going to its link currently takes you a blank template page of USL-1, but could this be a hint that USL is venturing again into professional indoor soccer?
In 1986, USL began as the Southwest Indoor Soccer League, but changed its name later that year to the Southwest Independent Soccer League, then changed it again in 1990 (Sunbelt Independent Soccer League) and in 1991 (United States Interregional Soccer League), but operated both indoor and outdoor leagues, with the indoor league being renamed the I-League in 1996 and lasting until the 1997-98 season.
If USL intends to return to indoor soccer, they would challenge the thrice-revived Major Indoor Soccer League and the Professional Arena Soccer League, along with another possible newcomer to the party, the proposed Arena Soccer Association.
I'll keep you posted on what the USL's proposed (or revived?) I-League is all about.
