Major League Soccer's Seattle Sounders announced the signing Thursday of Uruguay national team midfielder Alvaro Fernandez as the third Designated Player on their roster.
Fernandez played in four games of the 2010 FIFA World Cup for his country, who finished fourth in the tournament, their best finish since 1970. He has played 11 times for the national team since debuting in 2008.
He spent the 2010 season playing for Universidad in Santiago, Chile, where they finished second in the Primera Division and are currently in the semifinals of Copa Libertadores, the South America club championship.
Fernandez has also played for top-flight teams in Mexico and Portugal during his career.
